About a Daemon
Daemon is the Latin word for the Ancient Greek daimon (δαίμων: “god”, “godlike”, “power”, “fate”). The original Ancient Greek word δαίμωνdaimōn does not carry negative connotations, but denotes a spirit or divine power, much like the Latin genius or numen. The Greek conception of a daimōn notably appears in the works of Plato, where it describes the divine inspiration of Socrates. The Greek terms do not have any connotations of evil or malevolence. In fact, εὐδαιμονία eudaimonia, (literally good-spiritedness) means happiness.
CTSS programmers in 1961 coined the term demon in analogy with Maxwell’s devil, and all systems descended from it, including Unix, have inherited the terminology.
Demons are characters from Greek mythology, some of whom performed tasks that the gods could not take care of, just as demons perform tasks in the background that the user is unwilling or unable to take care of.
